Greetings from theatre friends after the atrocities

Tromsø Dialog 2011 and Norsk teaterråd has received heartwarming greetings from theatre friends in connection with the events in Oslo and on Utøya:

From participating theatre groups at Tromsø Dialog 2011:

AITA/IATA stands beside all in Norwegian theatre

From:  AITA/IATA

To:       Svein J. Svensson, Chairman of the board
            Christin Sund, Secretary-general
Steinar Arnesen, NEATA representative on AITA/IATA Council
            Norwegian Theatre Council
            HATS

Dear friends

Today, day dawned over a nation in mourning. The television network showed us a terrible national tragedy. So far we have 91 causualties, a result of an attack against the very core of our society. Goverment buildings in the heart of Oslo were bombed with a devestating result, but luckily with only a few casualties.

Tromsø Dialog 2011 is cancelled

Due to the tragic events in Oslo, the last day of the festival is cancelled. We will gather in the Culture House, at the main stage tonight at 1800 hrs.

The Iranian performance ”The Flower” will be performed at 1800 hrs on the main stage in the Culture House. This is the only performance being staged tonight. The “Flower” sends the message of beauty and piece – a message that is comforting and important on a day like this. This will be a closed event for all festival participants.

All the world around the table

About 70 people  today took part in the symposium ”Bread and Circus”.

Tone Hoemsnes, project coordinator for the symposium, commented:

 - It’s wonderful that despite the language barrier, everyone is so engaged; they almost don’t want to leave the table when it’s time to move. The central question for discussion is how we can make more arenas for cultural activities regardless of poverty and social status.

A symposium on culture and poverty. You may become engaged! The subtitle ”Personal engagement in a global perspective” refers to the symposium’s use of the concept ”World café” – a method which allows large groups to discuss big questions in a personal and engaging space.

Reflections at ‘half time’

Half way through the festival, we sit in the foyer of the Culture House and reflect. It's full speed at the festival secretariat, but the tired staff still meet every request with a smile. The goal and theme of the festival was dialogue.

 - Have we managed it, Svein?

The world congress has been held – and this year all matters were decided in the record time of one day!

The chairman of the Norwegian Theatre Council, Svein J. Svensson, opened the congress and wished delegates welcome. He recognised the years of hard work behind these ten days and underlined the importance of a well-organised world body for amateur theatre.

HATS has applied for and been granted funds to organize an international theater camp Future Voices, of which the target groups were youths and young adults. This was to be a by-arrangement to Tromsø Dialog 2011.

Unfortunately, HATS have to cancel Future Voices. This is due to very few registrations from the target groups of the event.

Do you want to volunteer?

The Norwegian Theater Council and HATS are in cooperation organizing one of the world's oldest and most important festivals; the world festival for amateur theater 14th - 24th of July 2011.

The 2011 theme is DIALOGUE and our aim are to promote peace through the medium of theatre. The name of the festival is hence Tromsø DIALOG 2011.

We aim to initiate dialouges across borders and to keep the dialogue open: Together for theatre - together for peace!
