The world congress has been held – and this year all matters were decided in the record time of one day!
The chairman of the Norwegian Theatre Council, Svein J. Svensson, opened the congress and wished delegates welcome. He recognised the years of hard work behind these ten days and underlined the importance of a well-organised world body for amateur theatre.
Tromsø’s mayor, Arild Hausberg, spoke of his delight at Tromsø being chosen to host the congress and highlighted the city’s vibrant theatre and cultural life. He also discussed cultural exchange as a central issue in relation to the city’s twin town Palestine.
Paddy O´Dwyer received a standing ovation. In his closing speech he talked of his good years as president, the many great people he’d met, and the important political work yet to be done.
The newly elected president Merja Laaksovirta was received to applause. We wish her all the best in placing amateur theatre on the international political agenda.
