Johan Fredrik and Eva are siblings of 12 and 10 years of age, who are sent with the Sami nomads from Pajala, to the Norwegian oceanic land in Astafjord. When crossing the plains, the siblings follow two different raids, and are separated. Johan Fredrik settles in Gratangen. He is the main character of the play, and does not meet his sister again until 60 years have passed. They have lived only miles from each other, but on opposite sides of the mountain. Johan Fredrik quickly proves to be both strong and resourceful, and manages to get land of his own and to build his own turf hut. He marries Berit Maria and together they have three boys and a girl. All of the boys die. Johan Fredrik has to show his tough side in order to survive. He is in conflict with the Sami nomads. He does not accept that his wife is of Sami descent and his own origin as a Finnish immigrant is suppressed. When standing next to his last son's grave he needs to ask himself what he has spent his life on.

The 2011 theme is DIALOGUE and our aim are to promote peace through the medium of theatre. The name of the festival is hence Tromsø DIALOG 2011.

We aim to initiate dialouges across borders and to keep the dialogue open: Together for theatre - together for peace!
